Week 6 Enrichment in Zoos The goal of environmental enrichment is to get animals to interact with their environment and use their natural skills and behaviors. Animals in zoos don't have the same opportunities for physical and mental stimulation that wild animals do, so zoo keepers provide the animals with objects or changes to their environment that will stimulate the behaviors of healthy wild animals. This kind of enrichment gives animals something to think about, it gives them exercise, and it helps them to feel in control of their environment by giving them choices. Enrichment helps keep life interesting for zoo animals by presenting them with challenges and new things to explore.
Use the following resources to develop enrichment activities for your zoo exhibit.
Assignment:Think about what you learned about your animal and about enrichment activities in zoos. Design an activity that will enrich the life of your animal(s) in the habitat you are creating. You may draw the activity or describe it in words.
You can use the paint or draw program that comes with your computer (Paint on the PC). If you use Paint save your file and upload it on your student work page. Or you can use Art Pad to create an online drawing once you finish the drawing send it to me at michelle@giftedkidsnetwork.com through the artpad web site and I'll upload it for you.
If you draw your enrichment you can scan it and upload it below or fax it to me at 303-499-3084.
If you wish to describe it in words use a word processor and save the file, then upload it on your student page. If you are working in a group you can use the discussion forum set up last week for your group.
